steve

Well, the video I’m posting is probably kind of inappropriate, especially in light of the promise I made in my last post to write something substantial.  This is definitely not anything of weight or importance, believe me.

But I just really like Steve Martin, and I’ve probably been around my 12-year-old brother too much, but I think this scene is so funny that it’s worth sharing.  If this is not your humor, I’m so sorry…please don’t be offended by me…and now I’m being overdramatic, so I’ll just post the video….this is a scene from the remake of Pink Panther.

movies…

I’ve seen so many movies lately that I can’t help commenting a bit.

Spider-Man 3:  Just okay.  I’m not really one of those people who gets really inspired or excited by comic-book stories, and this one seemed to be lacking the philosophical depth that made the others feel like something special (apparently Peter’s past the whole “with great power comes great responsibility” phase…).  I never thought I’d see an emo Peter Parker (or Toby McGuire for that matter), and was equally surprised to see a villainous Topher Grace!

Shrek 3:  Average; doesn’t have the freshness of the first two.  There were still some good moments, like all the fairy-tale princesses burning their bras.  Justin Timberlake’s character was lame.  I don’t have high hopes for Shrek 4 and 5.

Disturbia:  I just saw this one last night and I’m several weeks later then the rest of the world.  I haven’t seen very many thriller movies, but I think I liked this one.   Sometimes a movie is way scarier if the filmmakers leave the details to your imagination instead of showing them.  This film showed restraint in that area, which made it very suspensful, until the end, when it kind of went off the deep end for me.  The last segment was not very believeable.  I do think that Shia LeBeouf is going to be working his way up to an A-list status over the next couple years.

Soon, I’m going to start blogging about more substantial matters, instead of just fluff, I promise!!

goodbye gilmores…

Tonight was the series finale of Gilmore Girls…I’m sad!  No more town troubador, no more analyzing Rory’s eye makeup, no more Carole King cameos.  I’ll be honest, I cried throughout the episode.  I know it sounds pathetic but it wasn’t really because the show was ending.  I mean, I do own the first six seasons on dvd.  But I just hate saying goodbye, and it seems like so many things are ending, and people moving away.

But, the circle of life continues…Grant Lee Phillips (a.k.a. the town troubador in gilmore girls) is playing often with Sean and Sara Watkins (of Nickel Creek) and the Watkins Family Hour…so, life goes on.

With Friends long gone, now Gilmore Girls, and with Scrubs winding down within a year or so, let’s hope there’s a decent new comedy somewhere in the horizon of tvland!

when you come back down

Last night was Nickel Creek’s “Farewell (for Now)” tour at the McCaw Hall in the Seattle Center, and Maren and I saw them for the fifth, and hopefully not the last, time.  (I still cannot believe I missed them when they played at the Q Café a couple years ago….that is so dumb.)

I’m disappointed and surprised to say, last night was kind of a yawn.  The musicianship was excellent of course, and I kept myself occupied by doing my best to flirt with Chris Thile from my seat in the fifth row.   But normally their concerts are peppered with entertaining covers of everyone from Britney to Coldplay.  Last night the few covers they did were not very exciting, the banter between Chris and Sara had too much of the air of trying to be funny then actually so, and they did far too many instrumental songs.  AND the show didn’t get out until nearly midnight, at which point I’m usually falling asleep to the Food Network half an hour ago.

But I still respect and love them wholeheartedly.  I think they’ve simply lost inspiration.  There is still no one like them, no one who has fused bluegrass and my generation’s culture together with superior musical talent.  Come back soon Nickel Creek!!!

Everybody needs a little R&R…

I don’t mean for my first post to be negative, but I have to process a bit about the whirlwind of controversy that is Rachel Ray.

Whether you love or hate her (and most opinions of Rachel are just that polarized), there’s a quality about this Food Network celebrity turned daytime talk-show host that is mesmerizing.  Granted, the way she thrashes her arms around when she’s speaking is a little alarming, and phrases such as “Yum-O!” are too corny for words.  But you have to admit there’s a glow about her as well.  She is who she is, and that is attractive.  I just wish she would let me be who I am…

In an interview* Rachel expresses her distate for introverts:

Ray has little tolerance for those unwilling to work as hard as she does-and even less for those she sees as too quiet and reserved. “People like that make me nervous, and I know they don’t like me. My voice carries. When something strikes me as funny, I laugh out loud. I like strong, even-tempered, honest people. And they have to have a sense of humor or I fire them.”

In last week’s People, she says more bluntly:  “Reserved people might have a problem with loud goofy Rachel Ray….Well, I’ve got a problem with people who are too quiet.” **

Hey!  That was mean!  Nevertheless, I will contintue to watch $40 a Day reruns.  I’m not exactly sure why.  Maybe it’s just because she’s so enthusiastic about life and living.  For a glimpse of this enthusiasm, and of the most obnoxious (but strangely hypnotizing) video you’ll ever see, check this out…
